High School Boys Soccer

The varsity boys soccer team took on Austin Regents in the area round of playoffs this week. South got on the board early in the first half only to have Regents come back and score 2 more creating a 1-2 deficit for the Pioneers. The team came out strong in the second half determined to keep their season alive. South tallied 3 goals in the second half to come away with a 4-2 victory. Goals were scored by Nick Hatch, Jace Windom, Eli Garrabrant, and Noah Merrill. Matthew Giugliano added in an assists and Braden Leimkuheler made 4 saves. Up next was a trip to Columbus to take on St. Michael’s Academy in the regional final. LSA again was behind at the half trailing 0-1. The Pioneers quickly tied up the game within two minutes to begin the half. South added 2 more goals to come out with a 3-1 win. Goals were scored by Eli Garrbarnt, Alan Chuoke, and Jace Windom. Matthew Giugliano added in an assist and Braden Leimkuhler contributed 7 saves. With the win the Pioneers advance to the state final four for the second straight year. In the Semifinal South will take on San Antonio TMI a rematch of last year’s semifinal with a berth in Friday’s championship game on the line.
High School Boys Basketball

Pioneers Boys Varsity basketball was back in action this week after a long break due to the recent storm. This time it was for the beginning of the TAPPS 5A State Playoffs. The boys played a home game against Regents School of Austin on Saturday. The Boys played an exceptional game coming out on top in dominant fashion 75-47. It was a great team game by all players involved. The Pioneers were led by Paul Lindberg with 15 points followed by Wyatt Maher and Braeden Collins with 13 points each. For the next playoff round the Pioneers will head on the road to face St. Joseph Brownsville on Tuesday at 2:30pm. Please cheer on the Pioneers online. Thanks and Go Pioneers!!!
High School Girls Basketball

The varsity girls basketball team lost at Incarnate Word – Corpus Christi last Thursday 47-40. The loss eliminated the Lady Pioneers from the playoffs and ended their 2020-2021 season. The Lady Pioneers were led by Gayle Henderson’s 15 points and Makynna Robbins’ 13 points and 13 rebounds. Lily Psencik added 10 points and 5 rebounds while Caroline Schepmann also grabbed 5 rebounds.
Senior Gayle Henderson finished her LSA career with 1,144 points making her the third all-time leading scorer in Lady Pioneers history behind Ashley Ford (2011-2015 - 1,502 points) and Toni Jackson (1979-1982 - 1,384 points). The Lady Pioneers graduate four seniors: Gayle Henderson, Clarissa Miller, Emma Quinton and Christiana Straub.
High School Track

This past week the Pioneers competed in two meets. On Thursday the Pioneers traveled to St. Thomas for a JV Meet. LSA placed 2nd in the boys meet and 3rd in the girls. The girls won the 4 x 100 meter relay and the boys won the 4 x 400 meter relay. Individually Alec Salerno won the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, Adan Rivas the Pole Vault, and Wilson Klein the Triple Jump.
The Pioneers won both the boys and girls meet at this years LSA Invitational. The girls scored 140 points outdistancing The Woodlands Christian who scored 91 points. The boys meet saw the Pioneers out score The Woodlands Christian 149 to 133.
Individually the Pioneers saw a whole bunch of Personal Records (PR) set, and individual champions in the following events.
100 Meters: Ayana Smith and Joel Hutchins
200 Meters: Ayana Smith and Perry Brown
800 Meters: Marcus Gaitan,
Long Jump: Ayana Smith and AJ Okwonna.
In the Relays the Pioneers also had success. The Pioneer girls won the 4x 100 meter relay with a team of Isla Caudill, Lindsey Witson, Emily Adams, and Ayana Smith, the boys won the same relay with a team of AJ Okwanna, Joel Hutchins, Easton Brenner and Perry Brown. The Pioneers also won both 4 x 200 meter relays. The boys team of AJ Okwanna, Joel Hutchins, Jonah Weber, Perry Brown. The girls won their race with a team of Lindsey Witson, Emily Adams, Audrey Pfeiffer, Alaina Pink.
The Freshman boys 4 x 400 relay record was broken on Saturday. The team of Marcus Gaitan, Matthew Gaitan, Wilson Klein, and Jonah Weber broke the freshman record set in 2009.
Middle School Track

Middle School had Quad track meet this past Tuesday. It was a great learning experience for those that are out for their first year of track. Jeremy Gaitan set a new school record for 6th grade shot put.
